On June 17th, 2022 around 2:30AM, an Albuquerque Police DWI officer was traveling Eagle Ranch and Irving NW when he was struck by a truck who ran a red light. The truck continued to travel southbound on Eagle Ranch NW after the crash. After the crash the officer could be heard radioing to dispatch. “I am hurt, but I am ok.” He was evaluated on scene by rescue and transported to UNMH with more extensive injuries.Vaughn Stands the driver of the truck was taken into custody on scene.According to the criminal complaint, the officer had many broken bones and could not move his neck. The truck that struck the officers unit traveled 100 feet after the crash. Officers state Stands was likely going well over the speed limit. Stands admitted to officers to having “three beers” and he was arguing with his girlfriend and “not paying attention”. Stands thought he had hit a curb instead of a police car. The complaint does not give a condition of the female passenger in the pickup driven by Stands. As of now Stands will be charged with Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle (Driving While Under Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Any Drug. Other charges may be filed in the case.Stands does have an extensive court record to include several speeding tickets.
