Around 1:30PM, Albuquerque Police were dispatched to the Coronado Mall in regards to a shooting that wounded a person. When officers arrived they found a female with a gunshot wound.
According to a criminal complaint, witnesses said 30-year-old Laura Tapia approached a vehicle and pulled out a firearm. Tapia stared at the victims in the car before telling them she needed the car. The victims got out of the vehicle and Tapia appeared to be walking away from them. The victims then decided to get back in the car when they heard a gunshot ring out. The driver of the car was wounded by a bullet fired by Tapia.
The complaint states that Tapia took off from the scene and witnesses were able to give a description of Tapia to police. The complaint does not state if witnesses noticed Tapia had heavily Sharpie painted eyebrows, but they did mention Tapia’s faded red hair.
APD officers were able to locate Tapia with .40 caliber gun in her possession and place her under arrest. It is unclear if they also located an extra wide sharpie.
According to court records, Tapia has a criminal history that includes an arrest last month for obstructing an investigation into child abuse/neglect and battery on a peace officer. She was actually on pre-trial release for that case when she was arrested for today’s shooting.Tapia was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and brandishing a firearm for today’s incident on July 7th, 2023.
