Albuquerque –
Last night on 08/25/2023 at around 8:30PM APD’s Traffic Unit was dispatched to a fatal crash that occurred near the intersection of Central Ave NE and Chama St NE in the International War Zone District. Remarks on the call stated that a motorcycle had struck a pedestrian and the motorcycle rider was deceased on scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a stolen motorcycle, a 2021 a red Kawasaki (originally blue before it was stolen), was traveling westbound on Central Ave NE. According to witness statements, the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed west bound on Central. At the same time, two pedestrians were crossing Central from south to north, near the intersection with Mesilla, which is one block east of Chama. The pedestrians had made it through the center median. As the pair were walking across the westbound lanes of Central, one pedestrian was struck by the stolen motorcycle. The rider lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected from it. After the rider landed he slid across the roadway in a westbound direction and struck a light post on the center median. The motorcycle rider was not wearing a helmet and sustained a severe head injury. The rider was pronounced deceased on scene by AFR. The pedestrian also sustained injuries and was transported to UNMH and was later listed in stable condition.
OMI was contacted and took custody of the deceased rider. APD says that at this point, it appeared that high speed on part of the deceased motorcyclist was a major contributing factor in this crash. No charges are pending.
