According to a criminal complaint, the suspect, 27-year-old Walter Verner of Rio Rancho was driving in his vehicle when victims said Verner yelled at them, “What’s up, what’s up, what’s up?!” He proceeded to brandish a handgun and he pointed the handgun against his window towards the victims. The complaint goes on to say the victims followed Verner to a gas station while on the phone with 911. One victim thought that he and his wife were going to be killed. When deputies started investigating and questioning Verner, they observed his 3-year-old son in the back seat of the vehicle.
Verner was on pre-trial release for a violation of driving on a revoked license from a DWI case. Verner has a violent past, which includes charges of aggravated battery against household members, assault on police officers, and violating restraining orders. Those cases had either deferred sentencing or they were dismissed.
