On 6/2/2022 at around 12:50 AM, Albuquerque Police got reports of shots fired in the area of 1252 Mimbres St SW. Additional information came in that a man was shot in the stomach by a neighbor. The neighbor fled the scene in a grey Hyundai utility vehicle.
The vehicle returned to the scene and the suspect identified as Jarod McKenzie turned himself in. According to a criminal complaint, two males were walking back from a convenience store when a vehicle drove by them at a high rate of speed. The driver identified as Mckenzie got into an argument with the two males. A witness said Mckenzie got out of the vehicle and took a swing at the victim. Punches were returned and they went to the ground. Another witness said Mckenzie fired off rounds in the air.
The complaint goes on to say Mckenzie was interviewed by detectives and he decided to “throw fists” with the individual who confronted him. During the fight he felt he might have lost consciousness and felt it was necessary to pull out his firearm. He shot the person standing over him.
Mckenzie is charged with second degree murder.
