An APD officer walks the scene of a serious crash on the corner
Albuquerque, NM –
Early this morning, Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire and Rescue responded to a car crash on the corner of Hazeldine Ave and Broadway Blvd SE. A sedan crashed into a concrete wall and flipped onto its roof. The crash appears to have taken out a power line in the area and caused power outages for the neighborhood. The car appeared to have also caught fire after the crash.
While on scene, we noticed a multi-agency task force investigating the serious crash. This usually means a police interaction happened with the vehicle or occupant and a crash happened.
Witnesses on scene told us there were at least two people in the vehicle and they heard a loud crash outside of their house.
APD civilian spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said at least one person was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries from the crash, which occurred at 2:47 a.m.
UPDATE FROM APD:
The single-vehicle crash occurred at 2:47 a.m. as police called off a pursuit. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash.
Detectives are trying to determine the relationship between the crash and an earlier incident that police were investigating.
Police were initially alerted at 2:13 a.m. to possible shots fired as a caller to 911 was reporting someone was breaking into his vehicle, which was parked near Gold Ave. and 2nd St., S.W. The caller said he approached the individual who then pointed a gun at his head, and a second person also produced a gun and pointed it at him. It was later determined that the first suspect stole a firearm from the parked vehicle.
During the investigation officers obtained possible suspect and vehicle information. One officer observed a two people leaving the area in a vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop and the officer then began a vehicle pursuit.
The officer was advised to terminate the pursuit and shortly after the termination he arrived on the vehicle which had crashed at the intersection of Broadway Ave. and Hazeldine Ave.
The white 2013 Chrysler was traveling southbound on Broadway Ave at a high rate of speed and began to lose control just north of Hazeldine Ave. The vehicle entered the northbound lanes of Broadway Blvd and struck a tree on the east side of the street. After the vehicle struck the tree it began to roll and then struck an electrical pole and a building located at 702 Broadway Blvd.
The male driver of the vehicle died on scene and the male passenger was transported to a local hospital for a leg injury.
Further investigation concluded that the male driver was possibly intoxicated.
More information will be provided when and if it becomes available.
