New Details identifying suspect who shot an APD tactical officer during a Warrant

Albuquerque, NM – APD officials have released the identity of the man who shot a police officer and was killed by gunfire returned by police on Thursday in Northeast Albuquerque. APD has not released the name of the officer shot by Galaviz.

According to APD Emmanuel Galaviz Campos, 20, was wanted on two warrants, including a warrant out of Santa Fe for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at or from a motor vehicle. APD detectives were also searching for Galaviz Campos in connection with a homicide investigation. He was considered a person of interest in that investigation. Officials have not said which homicide he was a suspect of.

As SWAT officers attempted to apprehend Galaviz Campos on his warrants, he fired a gun, striking an APD officer in the arm. Officers returned fire, striking Galaviz Campos and killing him.

The officer who was injured was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released last night.

APD says that over the next several months, they will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will continue interviewing any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests. After the investigation is complete, APD’s Force Review Board will forward the findings to the Superintendent of Police Reform to determine if this incident met the high standards of the Albuquerque Police Department. The Multi-Agency Task Force will forward its case to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.
