According to a criminal complaint, 21-year-old NMSU student athlete Mike Peake was lured onto the UNM campus to meet up with a girl to have sex with her. Once on campus, Peake was jumped by Smith and two others. Peake was in town with his Las Cruces basketball team for a game, which was to happen later that day against their rivals, the University of New Mexico basketball team.
Currently suspended NMSU basketball player Mike Peake.
During the investigation, New Mexico State Police found that Peake was picked up in a yellow Camaro and taken to the hospital. Security footage shows a Camaro pull up, individuals are then seen helping Peake into the vehicle and then the vehicle drives off UNM campus. The gun Peake used was taken back to the hotel where New Mexico State basketball team was staying.
Jonathan Smith, 19, of Albuquerque
New Mexico State Police have charged Jonathan Smith, 19, of Albuquerque with his role involving the deadly shooting on the UNM campus. He was one of the three seen on camera ambushing Peake on campus. The female that was with Peake was a juvenile and was booked into the juvenile detention system.
The events that lead up to the shooting are said to have happened because the UNM students wanted vengeance for a fight that had happened previously at a football game a few weeks earlier.
