On February 14, 2023, Albuquerque police arrested and subsequently charged 40-year-old, Giovanni Salazar, with allegedly shooting and killing his father, Eddie Salazar. The homicide occurred around 6am off of Hillspire Ave NW, the home reportedly belonged to the father Eddie Salazar.
Dispatchers received a “distressed” call from Giovanni Salazar, in which, Giovanni reported that his father had been shot. Giovanni went on to tell dispatch that his father was arguing and fighting with him. Giovanni went on to tell the 911 dispatcher that he had a gun and it went off when his father threw something at him.
When APD Officers arrived on scene, they found Eddie Salazar with a gunshot wound to his right hip. Eddie was laying on the ground, he was surrounded by blood, and he was determined to be deceased. At that time, APD also made contact with Giovanni Salazar. Giovanni and his clothing were reportedly covered in blood and he was taken into custody. Another officer found Giovanni’s two children, they were inside Giovanni’s bedroom with the door closed, both children are under the age of 10.
After APD obtained a search warrant, detectives located a black handgun inside of a bathroom on top of the bathroom sink countertop. The gun was also found in a holster. The bathroom where the gun was located, it was next to a bedroom belonging to Giovanni. A bloody magazine belonging to the gun was found adjacent to the gun.
During the course of the investigation, APD detectives determined that there was a pause in time during the argument between Giovanni and Eddie. Giovanni made an attempt to intentionally retrieve his firearm where he then removed it from its holster to confront Eddie. It is believed that Giovanni could have tried to diffuse the situation but instead, Giovanni left the living room where the initial altercation transpired, he went to his bedroom and returned to the living room where he could see his father on the opposite side and shot at him across the room, this also endangered his two young children. Giovanni is also being charged with abuse of a child. Giovanni also reportedly confessed to using meth and said he had not slept for more than a day.
Giovanni was subsequently booked into Metropolitan Detention Center on an open count of murder and child abuse.
Giovanni Salazar has many past charges for domestic violence (aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery on/against a household member (x5), and aggravated battery with great bodily harm or using a deadly weapon) the charges were either Dismissed by Prosecutor/ Nolle Prosequi, dropped or the prosecutor could not move forward.
