Albuquerque –
On December 3rd, 2025, the Albuquerque Police Department and New Mexico State Police were dispatched to a crash near the intersection of Gibson Blvd and Florida St SE. Police were notified that a car had crashed into a tree and the driver attempted to flee leaving behind her child.
According to a criminal complaint, 22-year-old Shayla Poncho was detained by State Police when she tried to run from the scene. The complaint goes on to say the car had airbags deploy and the child was NOT in a car seat.
Officers found at least four open containers of hard alcohol and Poncho was belligerent and emotional, yelling at officers.
She claimed she was trying to “get away from him” it was believed she was referring to a boyfriend but officers could not confirm if any of these threats were credible. While officers attempted their DWI investigation, Poncho kicked and resisted officers on scene and at a local hospital.
Poncho seemed to have more of a toddler meltdown then her actual child had.
She is charged with two counts of battery on a peace officer, child abuse, DWI first offense, resisting evading or obstructing an officer.
