Warzone, ABQ– The Albuquerque Police Department arrested Edith Estrada-Sigala, of Albuquerque, for child abuse resulting in death after her 7-month-old infant, drowned in the bathtub of her home on March 3, 2025. Albuquerque Fire Rescue was initially called to the scene at 517 San Pablo St SE for a baby barely breathing. AFR radioed for APD to come to the scene after members of the family were understandably distressed.

According to investigators, Estrada-Sigala spent the night of March 2 at her boyfriend’s apartment, where she consumed alcohol and became “a little tipsy.” She had a baby with her at the apartment and returned home the following morning. After taking her older son to school, she and the infant remained at their residence, where she spent the morning allegedly cleaning while the baby played.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Estrada-Sigala said she took a nap, during which Estrada-Sigala took one shot of Pink Whitney vodka. She said the baby awoke between noon and 1:00 p.m., prompting her to give him a bath due to a diaper rash from a recent bout of diarrhea. She filled the bathtub halfway, placed the infant in his bath seat with some toys, and remained in the bathroom for some time before the sound of her clothes dryer caught her attention.

According to the criminal complaint, Estrada-Sigala left the bathroom to tend to laundry and subsequently entered her bedroom to complete more tasks. She admitted to investigators that she then “laid down” without the intention of falling asleep. She was uncertain about how long she remained in her bedroom.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., her mother arrived at the home after multiple unanswered calls. Estrada-Sigala, still half-asleep, opened the door. The grandma inquired about her grandson, whom Estrada-Sigala initially believed was in a bassinet in her room. However, after realizing the baby was not there, she rushed to the bathroom, where she found him lying on his back, pale and blue in the bathtub.

Estrada-Sigala and her mother immediately began CPR and called 911. Emergency responders arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

During questioning, Estrada-Sigala admitted to having a drinking problem and frequently consuming alcohol. She also acknowledged previously leaving her son unattended in the bathtub while doing housework. When asked about the circumstances, she stated that she believed her son drowned in the bathtub.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, authorities determined there was probable cause for an arrest warrant. Estrada-Sigala was taken into custody and charged with child abuse resulting in death. The case remains under investigation as officials review further details surrounding the incident.

  1. @everyone
1st such a shame as a parent/human it breaks my heart to read this.
2nd to the first responders who had to handle this the mental stress about this should NOT be overlooked or downplayed. My last call that I responded to as a firefighter was a MVA involving 2 vehicles. The solo occupant of the most damaged vehicle was a 16 yr old. She had been rejected from the vehicle. We found her roughly 20 yards away in basically a ditch. Needless to say she sustained critical injuries. As I was trying to stabilize her neck all she was saying was “I want my mom” it was devastating to know I couldn’t help her. Again that was my last call. I tried to just push it away. I didn’t talk about it for years. I’ve come to realize that wasn’t the right way to handle it. So PLEASE talk to someone get it off your chests

    1. I am sorry you had to experience that Joe. Especially on your last day. My son in law is also a first responder and had a very hard day today due to “something” he saw recently which involved a small child (I believe it was in fact this case but have not had a chance to speak with him). I salute you and I have very high respect for all first responders.

  3. She don’t deserve to live. These crimes against children can be avoided if scum like her were unable to have children. R.i.p precious baby. Gone too soon didn’t even get to live.

    1. From just the title of ur name here it’s obvious if the pessimistic and negative side of humanity. and would like to remind u that WE ALL LIVE IN OUR OWN GLASS HOUSES ,me ,you ,everyone and should remember that before we start picking up rocks …had she planned and wanted his death then I’d agree with but this was a horrible accident not pre meditated and I hope that will be shown in sentencing

      1. It’s called responsibility that prevents “accidents” like this from happening. She wasn’t responsible for drinking while caring for a baby. Don’t get all high and mighty with your nonsensical sermon. She deserves the maximum punishment that the law allows. And should be ostracized by family.

    1. I won’t villify and condem this poor woman who I’m sure loved her son very much. .she’s not a monster who wanted or planned this to happen she made a very big mistake with horrible consequences. She beats heslf up more than any of us could …she will be punished ..she is also deserving of forgiveness and compassion.my heart goes out to her and her family ..this destroyed more than just 1 person but an entire family is wrecked from this …I pray she looks for God in this time ..if she ever will needs him its gonna be now …she didnt want or plan this WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT and show compassion in a horrible situation

  4. I’m so sick of hearing stories like this!!! That POS excuse for a mother will probably get an ankle bracelet in this unjust state.. I just hope & pray that the older child has welcoming family to grow up with
    Rest in Peace baby❤️
