The Albuquerque Police Department has filed charges against 17-year-old Jan Lopez-Sanchez for a shooting that inflicted critical injuries on a 17-year-old female, with whom he reportedly had a sporadic dating history. The shooting occured on November 5, 2023.

The incident unfolded as the victim and another teen were in a blue Dodge parked in front of her West Side home. The male companion informed detectives about their on-and-off relationship spanning a year. Inside the vehicle, the female received phone calls from a male friend, but she did not answer his calls. Their evening took a terrifying turn when a white/pearl Cadillac pulled up beside them.

While seated in the blue Dodge, a second car, characterized as a white/pearl Cadillac, approached them. The female instructed the male driver to leave, and as he shifted the car into drive, the driver of the white Cadillac began shooting at them. The white Cadillac persisted in tailing them, discharging additional shots. Jan Lopez-Sanchez, identified as the driver of the Cadillac, was later revealed to be in communication with or romantically involved with the female, as per information from her parents.

The male driver of the blue Dodge informed investigators that he observed the female victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Describing the events that followed, he mentioned returning fire at the individuals in the Cadillac. Eventually, he steered the blue Dodge into a dead-end street, where he parked and hastily sought refuge by fleeing from the blue Dodge into an unfamiliar backyard.

Subsequently, he recounted witnessing a black 4-door vehicle pull up behind his car, with an individual exiting and approaching his vehicle. In response to the escalating situation, the male promptly dialed 911, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the police.

The wounded female was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. According to the latest information provided by the APD, the female victim continues to be listed in critical condition.

The APD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit identified Lopez-Sanchez as the shooter, securing an arrest warrant with charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, criminal damage to property, unlawful possession of a firearm, and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
