ABQ Police Headquarters – APD’s Police Chief Harold Medina and other leaders from his violent crimes unit held a press conference to discuss the 117 murder suspects they say they have been arrested this year. APD officials say they have investigated 119 homicides this year. APD says the number of arrests made offers them an opportunity to identify trends based on which individuals within the community are committing these crimes in Albuquerque.
We are unclear why APD counts cleared homicides from 2012 up till today in its calculations, but it appears to help give a favorable current percentage rate.
By our count, APD alone has investigated 134 homicides so far in 2022. Of those 134, only 74 have been cleared, which would put APD’s clearance rate for 2022, by itself and without counting random years prior, at a dismal 55%.
We are working on a much more in depth investigation into the actual 2022 numbers and we will release that story at year end.
