Albuquerque –

The Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF) is investigating an early morning incident in which a domestic violence suspect died while officers from the Albuquerque Police Department were responding to a call.

According to APD’s civilian PIO Gilbert Gallegos, “the adult male was unconscious, but breathing, when officers arrived shortly after 1 a.m. at the apartment located at 411 Tennessee St. SE. He stopped breathing after officers arrived. Attempts to revive the man were not successful and emergency personnel determined he was deceased.

Because the individual was in police custody at the time of his death, the Multi-Agency Task Force was called to conduct an independent investigation. The case remains under investigation.

Neighbors reported that APD’s crime scene RV remained at the scene through the morning, with Tennessee St SE closed between Bell Ave and Trumbull Ave.

This is APD’s second in-custody death since March 4, 2026.

Updates will be provided if and when more information becomes available.

UPDATE:

On Monday, April 13, APD’s civilian Public Information Officer stated that “The man who died in this incident was identified as Edgar Rivera, 33. The Office of the Medical Investigator did not determine the cause of death during an autopsy today. Additional tests will be required.

Investigators will continue to investigate the death, but it does not appear to be a homicide at this time.”
