Albuquerque – Albuquerque police officers were involved in a shooting which left one man dead earlier this afternoon. It is unclear if the man shot himself after getting shot by officers, or if officers killed him. A long investigation will need to happen to figure out exactly what happened.
APD’s Chief Medina says that at around 2:30PM this afternoon his officers got a call that there was a man experiencing a mental health crisis and he was parked in his pickup truck in an apartment complex on Mcmahon near Golf Course. The man told 911 that he needed help. When officers arrived they negotiated with him for several minutes. At one point the man got out of his truck and walked around with at least one firearm. The man did point his weapon at officers according to police and at least two officers shot the man. The man then got back into his truck and one more shot was heard from inside the truck as it fled from officers. The truck smashed into a large retaining wall which divides the apartment complex and the Smiths property. Officers approached the truck with a drone after the crash and verified the man was dead inside the truck.
A background of the man found that police had dealt with him and his mental health issues numerous times in the past and it has been documented extensively. The states Red Flag law was also used against the man in October of last year. It is believed at least 9 or 10 firearms were taken from the man during the red flag investigation. It is unclear how the man got firearms again.
The incident happened during rush hour and McMahon was closed in both directions from Golf Course to just west of Lovelace hospital while police investigated. The investigation caused major traffic issues in the area.
We will update this story if we learn more.
