Albuquerque –

On October 15th, 2026, we received numerous tips regarding a large police presence about a dead baby on the corner of 1st and Copper. That night we reached out to APD to see what the call was about and we were ignored. We once again reached out to Rebecca Atkins, the Acting APD Communications Director, and she sent out a simple sentence about the call.

“It was deemed a miscarriage.”

Within a week, with limited information, the public had created various conspiracy and horrible stories that made the story go even more viral on social media. It’s important to note that all PIOs within APD have immediate access to information about calls within their department. It takes them five minutes to log on to their department-issued electronic devices or even call up directly field service supervisors or detectives immediately. It is their job to provide timely information to the media to keep stories from gaining the wrong narrative. The PIO’s resources include access to dispatchers, sworn supervisors, and the internal computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system or even the same radios issued to media.

Today, APD’s Atkins sent out an awkward e-mail saying:

APD conducted a thorough investigation into the discovery of a fetus in the early stages of development which was non-viable. Following a comprehensive review of the evidence and coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator, investigators determined that the situation was related to reports of a medical emergency involving a female, which resulted in a natural miscarriage. The individual was transported for medical treatment.

She went on to say APD understands the community’s concern surrounding events of this nature; however, we strongly encourage the public and media outlets to rely on official updates and avoid sharing unverified, speculative information on social media.

It has been five days since the story first aired and APD PIO’s knew this information immediately. Its unprofessional of the PIO’s office to lash out at media after we had asked for this information from the beginning. We are relieved that we finally received this official narrative from the APD regarding this call even though we had asked days ago.
