An APD PIO advised media in a press release that a fatal crash happened overnight in SW Albuquerque. This is their statement:

On Friday January 27th 2023, at around 3:00a.m. a fatal crash involving two vehicles occurred on Dennis Chavez Blvd. S.W. between the intersections of Unser Blvd and 98th St S.W. A Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Dennis Chavez Blvd. and a Buick sedan was traveling westbound on Dennis Chavez Blvd. The Buick came back as a stolen vehicle.

The two vehicles struck each other head on, and the driver of the Hyundai died on scene. After the collision the male driver of Buick fled from the scene on foot. A witness to the crash stated that the male driver was possibly a younger Hispanic male in his late teens, wearing dark clothing and had a thin build.

It is unknown if speed or alcohol were a factor in the crash. It is also unknown which vehicle crossed over the double yellow center lines causing the crash. The male driver of the Buick was not located or contacted, and charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
