SW Albuquerque, NM – Today, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference to discuss the deadly deputy involved shooting that happened on April 16th, 2023. At around 10:00AM, on the 16th the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene of a house where a father was concerned about his adult son, Jared Romero. The father reported Jared Romero was having “mental issues” and had been “diagnosed with delusional disorder amongst other things.”
The shooting occurred at 2316 Griffin Rd SW in the south valley. What the Sheriff’s Office revealed was, the man was holding a knife to his neck and telling BCSO Deputies to shoot him.

Two deputies fired their duty weapons at Jared Romero, 35, who was armed with a knife. The gunshots inflicted fatal wounds to Romero. Sheriff John Allen and his staff provided details of various ways to improve mental health calls for service.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Multi-Agency Taskforce. That Multi-Agency Taskforce investigation will be followed up by an internal investigation. This was the 36th homicide of 2023 and currently the Albuquerque metro area is at 43.
