Bernalillo County – 

On Wednesday, May 28, an inmate died at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) despite rigorous life-saving efforts.

The individual who passed away was a female inmate, age 45. An unidentified agency booked her into MDC around 6 AM on Monday. Around 5:30 AM on Wednesday, staff discovered her unresponsive.

MDC staff, alongside the University of New Mexico Hospital medical team, responded and began administering life-saving measures. Despite these efforts, medical personnel pronounced her dead at 5:48 AM. MDC is not identifying the inmate at this time, as efforts continue to notify her next of kin. 

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) received the notification of the incident and responded to the scene. In accordance with standard procedures, the incident is under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death.
