I-40 Reopened After APD and AFR Respond to Jumper on Overpass

Albuquerque –

The Albuquerque Police Department is currently responding to an incident involving a jumper on the Wyoming overpass along Eastbound I-40.

For the safety of the public and the individual involved, eastbound I-40 is currently shut down in the immediate area as officers work to safely resolve the situation.

We drove through the area earlier and observed a male on the opposite side of the fence on the Wyoming overpass, at times standing and at other times sitting. Officers with the Albuquerque Police Department and crews with Albuquerque Fire Rescue were on scene.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area, expect delays, and seek alternate routes. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.

The NMDOT signage is advising drivers to exit at Louisiana.

If we learn more about this incident, we will update you.

UPDATE:

As of 10:43 AM, officers with the Albuquerque Police Department are closing interstate 40 westbound.

UPDATE 2:

We learned that the man on the bridge jumped into westbound lanes of I-40 at approximately 10:45 AM. Albuquerque Fire Rescue was already on scene when radio traffic indicated crews had been dispatched to a report of a person struck in the westbound lanes.

At this time, we do not know the condition of the man who jumped.

Officers continue to keep two lanes of westbound I-40 closed, though one lane is reportedly expected to reopen soon.

Around 11:14 AM, northbound Wyoming at Interstate 40 was reopened.

UPDATE 3:

At 11:16 AM, officers re-closed all westbound lanes of I-40 after reckless drivers attempted to bypass the two lane closures which were established as part of the ongoing crash investigation.

UPDATE 4:

Just before 11:35 AM, officers reopened lanes of traffic on interstate 40. Reportedly, the man who jumped was listed in critical but stable condition.
