Firefighters Battle “10K Fire” in Sandia Mountains

A fire has started in the Sandia Mountains, it is located near the 10K Trail.

According to nmfireinfo.com the fire reportedly started on June 12, 2023 around 1:40PM. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. At 2pm, the size of the fire was estimated to be at 0.25 acres. The location is west of 10K Trail, North of NM Hwy 536 and East of Ellis Trailhead. Containment is reportedly at 0%.

Resources on scene include firefighters from the Cibola National Forest, Bernalillo County and Albuquerque Fire have all been dispatched and are responding. Structures reportedly at risk include the communication towers on the Sandia Crest as well as numerous Forest Service Infrastructure. At this time, the fire is not a threat to any communities, and there are no evacuations currently in effect.

The public is asked to please stay away from 10K Fire operations. The Crest Highway, Hwy 536, may be impacted by fire fighting traffic. Area trailheads could also be impacted.

Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and firefighters must cease air operations if drones are seen flying. The public is reminded that “If you fly, we can’t!

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of Tijeras, Edgewood, Moriarty and Albuquerque / within a 50 mile radius of the 10K Fire. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
