APD Officers work on 58-year-old Frank Baty after officers were involved in a shooting with Baty.
Downtown Albuquerque –
On June 19th, 2022, just before 3:30AM, Albuquerque Police officers were finishing a call for service at the Hotel Andaluz when a man in a SUV stopped in front of their patrol units and started shouting at them.

Officers noticed that the man was armed and they began to try and de-escalate the situation. 58-year-old Frank Baty was given multiple commands by officers to drop his weapon and they told him repeatedly that they did not want to shoot him. Baty did not respond to their commands and requests. Eventually, Baty made an action that made the officers feel that their lives were in danger. They opened fire on Baty and he was killed.
Investigators found out later that Baty had mental health issues and wanted to commit “suicide by cop.” Baty was the 75th homicide in 2022. APD reports these type incidents as “justifiable” homicide.
