Albuquerque –
APD announced in a press release that violent crimes detectives determined the deaths of a mother and son on Feb. 1, 2024, were likely a murder-suicide.
APD goes on to say that Albuquerque Community Safety responders were dispatched on the morning of February 1 to conduct a welfare check at a home in the 10400 block of Constitution Ave. N.E. Through a window, they observed a woman who appeared to be deceased inside.
APD officers in the Foothills Area Command arrived on scene to investigate further. When officers entered the home, they located the adult female and an adult male who were both deceased. At the time, a cause of death could not be determined for the woman, who was later identified as Maria Shroyer, 67. The male inside was identified as Robert Shroyer III, 38, and he had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
During a subsequent autopsy, the Office of the Medical Investigator located a gunshot wound to Maria Shroyer and determined she died as a result of a homicide.
Detectives also learned that Maria Shroyer was the caregiver for Robert, who was her adult son. The preliminary investigation indicates that Robert Shroyer III fatally shot his mother, Maria Shroyer. Then, at some point, Robert Shroyer III fatally shot himself.
