ALBUQUERQUE –

APD detectives are investigating an overnight shooting as a justifiable homicide. We were notified by sworn APD officer Darren DeAguero, the Swing Shift Public Information Officer, of a shooting investigation last night.

On May 18, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting call at the Union 505 apartments, which are located at 801 Locust Place N.E.

According to APD’s civilian public information officer Rebecca Atkins’ follow-up email, one individual was located deceased near an apartment and another individual was detained.

Upon speaking with APD officers, the male that was detained told police that he was charged at by his neighbor and he shot his neighbor as a result. The male also told officers that he had issues with the deceased neighbor in the past.

Detectives are working with the District Attorney’s Office to investigate claims that the shooting was in self-defense.

This is the 49th homicide of 2023 in the Albuquerque metro area.
