Op-Ed by Amy Barela, Republican Party of New Mexico Chair
Today is a victory not just for one candidate, but for every voter in New Mexico who believes in
fair elections, equal access, and the fundamental right to choose their representation at the ballot
box.
The decision by the Supreme Court of New Mexico to unanimously restore Rebecca Dow to the
ballot was the right one, constitutionally, morally, and democratically. It sends a clear message:
political gamesmanship has no place in determining who voters are allowed to choose.
Let’s be clear about what happened. This was not a routine legal disagreement. This was a
deliberate strategy by progressive operatives to remove a strong candidate from the ballot, an
attempt to suppress voter choice and manipulate the outcome before a single vote was cast.
When one side seeks to win by eliminating opponents instead of earning votes, that is not
democracy, that is control.
But today, the system worked. The Court saw through the maneuvering and stood firmly on the
side of the people. Their unanimous decision reinforces what should never have been questioned:
voters, not political insiders, decide elections.
This incident is part of a larger and troubling pattern. As progressives begin to lose their grip on
power in New Mexico, especially as momentum builds around common-sense protections like
ensuring only citizens vote, they are doubling down on tactics designed to silence opposition
voices. If they cannot win in the open arena of ideas, they will attempt to shrink that arena.
New Mexicans see it. And they are rejecting it.
Across our state, there is growing support for election integrity, transparency, and fairness.
Policies like the SAVE Act reflect a simple principle: elections should be secure, and every legal
vote should count. No more, no less. At the same time, voters overwhelmingly believe that
candidates of all parties deserve a place on the ballot. That is not a partisan issue. It is a
democratic one.
Representative Dow’s victory today is about more than her candidacy. It is about preserving the
integrity of our electoral system. It is about ensuring that no political faction, left or right, can
manipulate the rules to silence the will of the people.
At the Republican Party of New Mexico, we will not stand by while these wrongful maneuvers
continue. We will fight, relentlessly and unapologetically, to protect the rights of New Mexicans.
We will stand with every citizen who demands fairness, transparency, and accountability. And we
will continue working to restore trust in a system that belongs to the people, not political elites.
This is not the end of the fight. It is a reminder of why the fight matters.
New Mexico is watching. And New Mexico is ready.
