Albuquerque –

Earlier this afternoon, police were requested to the area of La Plata Rd NW & 2nd St NW* for an incident with a person in a car who was reportedly firing shots in the area. It is unknown if officers from the Albuquerque Police Department made contact with the armed driver when the initial call came out, but they did establish a perimeter when the call came out.

Over the past few hours, the APD’s Air Support Unit, Metro 2, has been flying above the area, providing officers on the ground with aerial guidance. Air 2 began to run low on fuel, so the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, Metro 1, was launched about an hour ago.

We know officers on the ground are actively working in the area, this is an ongoing police investigation, so we do not want to compromise their safety or tactical plan, but people living in the area have reached out about the helicopter noise.

Should we gain further knowledge about this situation or if an arrest is made, we will promptly inform you.

UPDATE:

An earlier version stated 4th St NW, but the police activity is on 2nd St NW.

UPDATE 2:

Just before 8:45 PM, APD officers arrested the person who was eluding authorities. Once we learn more about the suspect, we will update you.

As of this update, APD is still in the area, but they should have officers cleared from the scene soon.

Update 3:

At around 9:30 PM, 2nd and La Plata was reopened.
