Downtown Albuquerque –
At approximately 10:30 PM on July 15, 2023, two vehicles were racing on Central Avenue when one of the vehicles lost control and struck four pedestrians who were in line at a food truck. All four pedestrians were transported by ambulance to the hospital, where three of them are listed in critical condition and one sustained non-critical injuries. It is unknown if anyone has been held responsible.
The driver of the vehicle that lost control has not been identified, and no other information about the accident is available at this time.
APD’s civilian PIO has not released any information about this incident. APD has not stated if either of the race car drivers will face charges for reckless driving, assault with a dangerous weapon or assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
This is a tragic reminder of the dangers of street racing. When drivers engage in this reckless behavior, they put themselves and others at risk of serious injury or death. We urge drivers to drive responsibly. Eating tacos at your favorite local taco truck should never be an impending death sentence.
We will continue to provide updates on this investigation as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, our thoughts are with the victims of this accident and their families. We hope for their speedy recovery.
