Albuquerque –
Around 1:20 PM, a rollover crash involving a Sun Van occurred near I-40 eastbound at 98th Street. The Sun Van struck a guardrail, and the driver fled the scene after the crash.
Officers with the Albuquerque Police Department pursued the driver on foot as he ran along I-40. It is reported that officers eventually apprehended the driver near I-40 west of 98th Street. A Taser was purportedly deployed, according to AFR radio transmission.
Due to the crash and ongoing police activity, I-40 eastbound is closed at Atrisco Vista. DOT signs claim one lane is open, but APD has advised all lanes are closed at this time. Drivers should expect delays.
A supervisor with the Transit department confirmed to APD that the driver worked for the Transit department, but alleged the vehicle was taken without their knowledge.
If more is learned about this crash, we will update you.
UPDATE:
APD is updating the road closure to I-40 eastbound at 98th, instead of I-40EB at Atrisco Vista. Traffic will now need to exit I-40 at 98th.
