Edward Gilbert Duran, a 64-year-old man, has been indicted by a Bernalillo County Grand Jury for three additional sexual assaults, making it a total of six charges against him.
Between 1990 and 1997, Duran is believed to have committed multiple rapes in Albuquerque, causing fear and concern among the community members.
Several decades ago, authorities collected rape kits from all the victims. In recent efforts to address the backlog of untested kits, four of them were examined. Investigators utilized forensic genetic genealogy to uncover potential leads, ultimately identifying Duran as a potential suspect.
Duran has a history of prior convictions for sexual assault. In 1979, he was convicted of rape and aggravated burglary, and in 1991, he was convicted of assault with intent to commit criminal sexual penetration.
Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman expressed determination to continue prosecuting Duran, whom investigators believe to be a serial predator. Duran is accused of terrorizing women in the Albuquerque community for an extended period.
Duran is scheduled to go on trial this fall, where evidence will be presented to determine his guilt or innocence.
