Del Norte High School

Albuquerque –

Minutes before 3:40 PM on Wednesday, March 5, two callers reported to police that they saw multiple juveniles involved in an altercation, followed by multiple rounds of gunfire near Del Norte High School. Six gunshots were purportedly fired. One caller stated one of the juveniles had a 9mm handgun. Another witness reported that several juveniles got into a car and fled the scene.

The fight and shooting occurred off campus, but since the incident happened near APS school property, both the APS Police and the Albuquerque Police Department responded. We want to reiterate this incident did NOT occur on school property.

APD presently does not have any gunshot wound victims reported at the school or at local area hospitals. One individual told police they were injured after tripping while running from the gunfire.

At the time of the incident, Del Norte’s school website had an alert which stated “As of 3:39 p.m., Del Norte High School is in a shelter-in-place due to police activity in the area.” APS lifted the shelter-in-place order at 3:49 PM.

With just two weeks left in the 60-day legislative session, the juvenile justice system (Children’s Code) has not been updated since the 1970s.

UPDATE:
