ALBUQUERQUE –
APD homicide detectives arrested Christopher Kirby today and charged him for Tuesday’s fatal shooting of his father, Thomas Kirby, at a home located at 5015 Larchmont Dr., N.E.
According to family members, Christopher Kirby, 38, suffered from mental illness and had become increasingly angry and delusional. Christopher Kirby lives with his mother at the home on Larchmont. His father, Thomas, 72, does not live at the home, but went there Tuesday evening to talk to Christopher.
According to the criminal complaint, Kirby consistently mentioned aliens are going to kill people and told family regularly that they will be assassinated or imprisoned for treason, and told his mom “you’re going to be dead.” Kirby would remind his mom that she was under treason constantly and that he was watching her. She said about one year ago there was an incident were Kirby grabbed her by the arm, caused bruising, told her to call the president and to get him a paycheck.
According to the criminal complaint, the mom did mention he was undiagnosed and was not on any medication for mental health issues. The mother did call Albuquerque Community Services when things were escalating to get help but the ACS operator told her to call back when he was at the residence. Kirby was dropping a child off and returned and shot his father five times.
Kirby drove away from the scene of the shooting and called 911 to report that he shot his parents and one of them was possibly deceased. He later told an AFR operator that he shot his father, who was probably dead, and he may have shot his mother. Christopher told the call-taker where he was and he was instructed to lock his firearm inside his car prior to officers arriving. Officers took him into custody and transported him to an APD substation. He requested a lawyer and declined to be interviewed by detectives.
Kirby is charged with an open count of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence. He was booked this morning into the Metro Detention Center.
There really is a mental health crisis in this country. People need to start getting help before it gets to this point and we really need to make help free somehow. And easier to access. I’m so done seeing people burying thier family members
These problems with mental illness could have been dealt with had the asylums not been banned or closed. Turning people like Mr Kirby loose on society are what we as security and law enforcement are forced to deal with. Democratic failed policies again.
Retard
That would have been both party’s that did that and it started in the 1950’s and Reagan finished the job!
You have Reagan to thank for those places being closed. Republicans are the ones we have to thank for how abysmal mental healthcare (or any healthcare) is in this country.
Just another fact they don’t teach in school.
It truly is sad that we as a society can not come together even over the simplist things like mental health. Everyone blames each other. There is absolutely ZERO personal accountability
