ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Chaos erupted at Coronado Mall as unconfirmed reports of an active shooter spread like wildfire.
Eyewitnesses at the mall have confirmed hearing shots fired, sending panic and fear throughout the shopping center. We have received numerous messages about a shooter at the mall.
Numerous videos posted on various social media platforms have shown people fleeing on foot from the mall, driving away from the Coronado Mall parking lot either describing what they witnessed or showing the massive police response to the shooting, or sheltering in place inside the mall.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are en route to Coronado Mall to address the unfolding crisis. Details are still emerging, and the situation remains fluid. The mall management has activated emergency response measures, working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of everyone on the premises.
At 4:20PM, 15 minutes after this original story was posted, APD issued a statement that said:
Responding officers quickly determined there is not an active shooter, and there does not appear to be any injuries.
APD officers were in the area monitoring a demonstration at the Uptown Shopping Area, when they were alerted to the reports of shots fired. They diverted to Coronado Mall.
While there were no injuries, officers did locate at least one bullet casing. Officers are also working to determine if the individual who fired the shot has been identified.
We heard on the scanner that this shooting may have stemmed from a fight between two individuals, it is unknown if the fight occurred inside the mall or outside of the mall.
Our reporters on the scene observed that the mall is currently being cleared out, and APD is directing traffic to ensure that people can safely leave the premises.
