According to BCSO, the Albuquerque Public Schools Police were the first to respond to the incident at Atrisco Heritage. However, given the nature of the event and its tragic outcome, the investigation was subsequently transferred to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
This fatal shooting is the same incident we reported to you last night, during which a 16-year-old was taken to a local hospital and subsequently died from his injuries. One of the individuals who dropped off the wounded teenager at the hospital was reportedly tracked to the Route 66 Diner, where he was observed changing clothes and disposing of evidence. Crime scene investigators allegedly found a bloody sweatshirt at the diner.
BCSO’s investigators are actively working to understand the full scope of this incident. In connection with this case, another juvenile, 16-year-old Adrian Martinez, has been taken into custody and is now facing charges that include involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
We reached out to APS for a comment on this shooting and if the individuals were on campus for a school-sponsored event. We received a response from APS, which explains what occurred on campus. Principal Irene Cisneros from Atrisco Heritage said in the letter to parents that:
The worst of our fears played out last night when one of our students was shot in the school parking lot shortly after a basketball game and later transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The details of the incident are still under investigation, but it appears the shooting transpired when two of our students were playing with a firearm in a vehicle, resulting in an accidental discharge that claimed the life of one of the teenagers.
The letter goes on to say that the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is currently examining the incident and will provide further details once the information is verified. You can see a full copy of the letter below or click here.
APS is having a press conference at 12:30 PM. We have a reporter headed to that and will update you if we learn more information.
UPDATE:
At the press conference, we learned that both the 16-year-old victim, Elijah Pohl-Morfin, and the 16-year-old taken into custody, Adrian Martinez, were 11th graders at Atrisco Heritage High School. According to APS, both were also football players.
