Man Shot and Killed in NE Albuquerque

Albuquerque-

Around 11:00PM, the Albuquerque Police Department received a ShotSpotter notification of five rounds being fired near the area of San Pablo St. and Chico Rd NE. Shortly after a person called 911 stating a woman came to the their door saying a man* had been shot.

When officers arrived on scene they found a man* with at least one gunshot wound to the head in the street. She was declared dead on scene.

Witnesses said they saw a man leave the scene on a bike. Around Midnight, APD located a man matching the description and took him into custody. While searching him they found a firearm on his person.

APD’s homicide detectives will be investigating the scene and the area will be closed down during the investigation.

This is the 84th homicide of 2024 and the 4th homicide of the Labor Day weekend.

UPDATE:

*It was later learned that the person killed was not a woman, but a man. This story has been amended to reflect the correct gender of the deceased.

The man killed was identified as Jerry Ortiz, and the person detained at the time was reportedly not charged. As of December 27, 2024, the APD still lists this homicide as “active” and unsolved.
