Albuquerque, NM –

At approximately 11:55 AM on March 7, 2024, Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Albuquerque Police Department received a dispatch regarding a vehicle fire on I-40 Eastbound at San Mateo Blvd.

Engine 19 arrived on the scene to find a car engulfed in flames on the shoulder of I-40. The black smoke was even visible on the NMDOT camera.

APD is assisting with locating the car’s owner and managing traffic in the area. Apparently, when APD arrived on the scene, the driver of the car was not present, and it sounds like the vehicle may have been reported as stolen.

Drivers may notice that the right-hand lane of I-40 eastbound, just before San Mateo, is blocked by a help truck or APD officer. Please drive with caution as they extinguish this vehicle fire.
