Albuquerque –

All around the United States there are going to be a “No Kings Day” to protest President Donald Trump’s administration and the military parade scheduled in Washington, D.C.

Like other cities across the nation there is a planned protest in Albuquerque on Saturday June 14th, 2025 at the Mariposa Park in northwest Albuquerque.

It is unclear why this park was chosen in City councilor Louie Sanchez’s district instead of the usual locations of protests either the UNM area, downtown, Old Town, or Civic Plaza. We noticed someone had filed for a permit not to exceed 500 people. We learned APD will have their ERT teams on standby in case shenanigans arise among the crowds.

The Albuquerque Police Department sent out an e-mail advising rally goers about traffic concerns and potential consequences if people decide to bring their guns to the rally. APD is citing federal laws about how one of the staging areas is a Gun-Free School Zone. There is a law that APD’s Chief Medina, Mayor Tim Keller, and then U.S. Attorney Alex Uballez enacted at a press conference in May of 2023 announcing that pretty much the entirety of Downtown fell under this law.

APD wanted to remind potential protest goers that:

People planning to attend a rally at Mariposa Basin Park on Saturday are advised to plan ahead for parking.

APD is also reminding the public that firearms are not allowed at the Mariposa Park nor at the Don Newton Community Center. The community center is considered a gun-free zone under the federal Gun-Free School Zone Act. The zone extends 1,000 feet from the center to include the Mariposa Basin Park.

“This rally is expected to include families and children, and we are prepared to do everything necessary to keep people safe,” APD Chief Harold Medina said. “We want to people to be able to safely express themselves and exercise their Constitutional rights. I urge everyone to be patient and respectful of each other.”

The public rally is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mariposa Basin Park, located in the Taylor Ranch area of Albuquerque’s West Side.

APD officers and PSA’s will conduct traffic control in the area to ensure the safety of the public during the event. Officers and Police Service Aides will wear traffic vests so drivers can easily identify them. Attendees will not be allowed to drive into neighborhoods near the park. Police Service Aides will allow residents in and out of intersections that will be blocked.

Limited parking will be available at Don Newton Community Center, Mariposa Park and on Taylor Ranch Rd., between Gold Course Rd. and Homestead Trail.

Additional parking is available at the Shoppes at Taylor Ranch (Taylor Ranch Rd. and Montaño Rd.), Cross of Hope church and Mesa View United Methodist church.

People are encouraged to enter the area traveling northbound on Taylor Ranch Rd. from Montano Rd., or southbound on Golf Course Rd. from Paseo del Norte.

Traffic from La Orilla Rd. will be directed south on Taylor Ranch.

This protest comes on the heels of the five year anniversary of the Old Town protest of the Don Juan de Oñate statue where a protester was shot by a counter protester Steven Ray Baca after a mob attacked Baca. The shooting was a combination of both sides escalating violence at the scene which we witnessed first hand. Baca plead no contest in June to aggravated battery, and pled guilty to battery, and unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon
