UPDATE:
This morning, Hunter Matney pled guilty to First-Degree Murder. The charge stems from an incident in July 2018, when Matney shot and killed Skyler Monday during an attempted robbery at the Courtyards Apartments in Northeast Albuquerque.
The District Attorney’s Office reported that Matney did not know the victim personally but contacted him on social media, arranging to meet to purchase a small amount of marijuana. Matney shot and killed Skyler Monday at the doorstep of his apartment before fleeing the scene. Evidence and witness testimony placed Matney at the crime scene.
Deputy District Attorney Emilie Edmonds and Assistant District Attorney Joe Brakenhoff handled the prosecution of the case.
District Attorney Sam Bregman said, “It’s just really sad — a 23-year-old lost his life over a small amount of marijuana. It’s another example of the kind of gun violence we keep seeing among young people, often over something so minor.”

All charges mentioned are drawn from official New Mexico Courts/Odyssey filings for the listed cases. Charges may be dropped, amended, or declined to be prosecuted at the time of trial or as part of a plea agreement. Booking photos and MDC links are included when available.
