On Sunday, July 12th, 2026, the Albuquerque Police Department public information office sent a vague e-mail about a deadly shooting that happened in the Barelas Neighborhood.
“APD is currently investigating a deadly shooting that occured at 8th Street and Marquez Ln. SW,” said Deputy Director of Communications Rebecca Atkins in an e-mail.
The e-mail did not say what time the shooting happened or any other details. It said APD will send an update when

Around 1:58 AM, APD’s public information officer Gilbert Gallegos sent an update on this incident saying:
“Homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that resulted in the death of a man on Sunday evening in the Barelas neighborhood.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 8:50 p.m. at the intersection of 8th St. and Marquez Ln., which is just north of Avenida Cesar Chavez, S.W.
The victim, an adult male in his 50s, died at the scene as a result of a gunshot wound.
An offender has not been identified. The investigation is on-going.”
