According to APD, investigators determined that the moped rider was traveling southbound on San Pablo, approaching Zuni, when he entered the intersection against a red light at a high speed. A 2007 Honda sedan traveling westbound on Zuni braked in an attempt to avoid a collision but was unable to do so.

The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the moped and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he later died.

The two occupants of the Honda were not injured.

Roads in the area reopened shortly after 6:05 PM.
