Albuquerque –
On July 20th, 2023, a joint SWAT operation with APD and NM State Police occurred in the Foothills of Albuquerque. APD said Emmanuel Galaviz Campos, 20, was wanted on two warrants, including a warrant out of Santa Fe for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at or from a motor vehicle. APD detectives were also searching for Galaviz Campos in connection with a homicide investigation. He was considered a person of interest in that investigation. Officials would not say which homicide he was a suspect of.
Almost a month later, APD officials today held a press conference showing the body camera footage of the incident that left one APD officer wounded in the arm and Campos dead. The videos show a dramatic series of events that show an APD SWAT officer facing a deadly situation. Campos can be seen in the video firing point blank at him through a closet of a child’s bedroom.

After the shots were exchanged, SWAT officers entered the apartment unit to secure Campos and heard a baby crying inside the apartment. The officers cleared the apartment and found a 2-year-old toddler in a bathtub of the apartment. A SWAT officer scooped up the child and rushed the toddler out of the apartment to waiting rescue personnel. The child appeared physically unharmed.

The suspect Campos, was then dragged out the apartment to receive medical care. The wounds Campos sustained from his gun battle with police were unsurvivable and he died on scene. Campos had many felonies in Santa Fe and was a person of interest in a homicide in Albuquerque. APD did not reveal what homicide he may have ties to.
The Multi-Agency Task Force will forward its case to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.
