Albuquerque –

On Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the United States Marshals Service-Southwest Investigative Fugitive Team (USMS-SWIFT) took action to apprehend Steven O’Neil, 39, due to a Federal Probation Violation, stemming from federal firearms violations.

Around 11:00 AM, USMS-SWIFT successfully located and positively identified O’Neil behind the wheel of a late-model Chevrolet Suburban. The team kept a watchful eye on O’Neil as he navigated the streets of Northern Albuquerque, exhibiting erratic driving behavior. While USMS-SWIFT vehicles are equipped with emergency lights and sirens, given the size of O’Neil’s vehicle and concerns for public safety, they sought support from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office for a felony traffic stop.

At approximately 1:30 PM, BCSO marked units, in coordination with USMS-SWIFT, attempted a felony traffic stop near the intersection of Carlisle Blvd NE and Cutler Ave NE. Although O’Neil did not accelerate away, he declined to adhere to the traffic stop instructions, opting to keep driving, albeit not at high speeds. O’Neil made a turn into the Walmart shopping center at Carlisle and Menaul but still refused to yield to law enforcement. In a moment of evasion, he accelerated out of containment, leading to collisions with multiple law enforcement vehicles during his escape.

Amidst the commotion, O’Neil’s attempt to evade the authorities also led to a collision involving a civilian vehicle. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and Emergency Medical Services promptly responded to assess the situation. Despite the impact, no individuals required transport by EMS.

Following his apprehension, O’Neil was transported to the USMS cell-block for processing and to schedule an initial court appearance. Presently, it remains uncertain if O’Neil will face additional state and/or federal charges.

This incident underscores the diligence of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of their communities. Individuals who possess information about fugitives are encouraged to cooperate with authorities by contacting the nearest U.S. Marshals office, reaching out to the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center at 1-800-336-0102, or utilizing the USMS Tips App.
