NW Albuquerque – At least one APD Officer shot and killed an armed shoplifter after a wild escape from the Kohls department store on Ellison and Alameda earlier this afternoon. APD tells us that numerous officers and detectives are roaming shopping areas looking for criminals as part of “operation sticky fingers”.

Today Kohl’s loss prevention personnel advised APD that they were watching a male and female stealing numerous items which added up to felony level crimes. When officers approached the pair the male ran away on foot with officers chasing. The female was captured immediately in the parking lot of Kohl’s. The male suspect produced a firearm of some sort and ran into a Barnes and Noble book store and then a Cold Stone Creamery. The suspect fled out a back door of the ice cream store as officers tried to evacuate the business. The suspect then ran north across Alameda into a professional building area on the north side of Alameda. Thats where officers again confronted the male and he was shot and killed.

Chief Medina was on vacation so Deputy Chief Mike Smathers briefed the media earlier this evening.
