According to the Albuquerque Police Department, shortly after midnight on Monday, November 28th, officers were called to a domestic dispute that was occurring near the area of Claremont Ave NE and Rhode Island St NE. Officers attempted to arrest the suspect on outstanding domestic violence warrant charges, however before the officers could detain him, the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence. The suspect is now refusing to comply with officers. As a result of the suspect not cooperating with police, APD’s Tactical Unit, which includes the Crisis Negotiation Team and APD SWAT team has been called to the scene.
People are advised to avoid the area of Claremont Ave NE and Rhode Island St NE until this situation is involved. Reportedly, Candelaria Rd NE might also be closed because of the SWAT activation. Furthermore, there are a couple of schools in the vicinity of the SWAT call. It is unknown how the SWAT activation will affect parents trying to drop off children for the day. If parents have children that attend schools in the immediate area, they should consider trying to reach the school to see if the particular school is impacted.
We reached out to Little Bear Coffee and the employee that we spoke to said they are not immediately affected. They said Pennsylvania St NE looks “relatively clear and unaffected” and the employee also claimed that Phoenix Ave NE appears to be open, so traffic can pass east and west on Phoenix Ave. If you are in the area of Pennsylvania and Phoenix, please consider supporting a local coffee shop!
We will update you with more information if and when we get it.
**9:05AM Update: APD says the suspect was taken into custody.**
