The man, later identified as 40-year-old Dyonte Layne Lindsey, was transported to the University of New Mexico hospital after his encounter with officers but he died two days later at the hospital.

Around 8:37 PM on March 1, APD received a 911 call about Lindsey, who was reportedly having hallucinations and was both walking and running through the lanes of traffic on Interstate 40 between Coors and Unser. As officers approached Lindsey, they found him armed with a knife. Despite commands to drop the knife, Lindsey ignored them and turned to walk back into traffic lanes. In response, an officer deployed his Taser.

Additional officers arrived at the scene and took Lindsey into custody as he continued to resist being handcuffed.

APD states that “The Multi-Agency Task Force will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will interview any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests. After the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.”

The media release goes on to say “APD’s Internal Affairs Force Division will also investigate the incident to determine whether the department’s policies were followed. The results of the administrative investigation will be forwarded to the city’s Superintendent of Police Reform to make final decisions on discipline.”

APD’s PIO Gilbert Gallegos said “APD’s Force Review Board, made up of deputy chiefs, will also review the incident to identify trends and potential policy changes that may be needed in response to any shortcomings that are identified.”

We reached out to APD to find out more information about Lindsey, but as of this publication, we had not received a reply to our inquiry.
