A serious accident has occurred on eastbound I-40 near the Tijeras exit. BCSO Deputies rushed to the scene at the 175-mile marker, but the accident was so severe that life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As for the details of the accident, they are limited at this point. The BCSO traffic investigation unit is on its way to gather more information, and we will provide updates as soon as we have them.
In the meantime, please be aware that all of eastbound I-40 is closed starting from the Carnuel exit at the 170-mile marker.
In viewing the NMDOT cameras at the time of this posting, we could see a BCSO unit blocking eastbound I-40. The camera view from the photo we provided is NM DOT camera “I-40 @ Carnuel Overpass.” You can view the NMDOT cameras at https://nmroads.com/mapIndex.html?# and at the top, click “Cameras and DMS,” and then on the next screen that pops up, click “view camera list.”
We have a reporter headed to the scene to gather more information.
Stay tuned for further updates and drive safely.
UPDATE:
Around 3:10PM, based on NMDOT camera footage, it appears as though the NMSP and BCSO may have reopened some of eastbound lanes of I-40. Drivers are advised that the traffic on I-40 was, at one point, backed up to I-40 and Wyoming, so if the lanes are reopened, it might be slow going for some time.
