UPDATE:
Today, February 10, 2025, a jury found Jose Mendoza Espinoza guilty of First-Degree Murder and four counts of Tampering with Evidence. In October 2023, Mendoza Espinoza brutally murdered 35-year-old-year-old transgender woman Sherlyn Marjorie, whom he had been in a sexual relationship with for several years. Mendoza Espinoza claimed that he committed the murder because Marjorie had demanded money and threatened to reveal their ongoing affair to his family. Marjorie’s friends discovered her vehicle. Several days later, her body was found in a ditch. She died from asphyxial injuries, and it is believed that she had either been strangled or suffocated to death.
Mendoza Espinoza faces the prospect of life imprisonment for this heinous crime.
“We will continue to hold violent people accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our team continues to work extremely hard on difficult cases to bring justice to victims and their family members,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.
