Albuquerque, Bernalillo County –
On September 6th, 2023, Bernalillo County celebrated the groundbreaking for Bernalillo County Fire Station #66, the first to be built in more than 25 years. The fire station being constructed at the southwest corner of Atrisco Vista Boulevard and Central Avenue SW, will serve the growing West Side area including the nearby Metropolitan Detention Center.
“That’s where the city is going to continue growing and it’s important that we’re starting with public safety,” says District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.
The fire station will be the largest for Bernalillo County Fire Rescue at approximately 11,475 square feet. The building will include four apparatus bays, eleven bunks, office areas, training facilities and more. The new fire station also includes 21 new positions to Bernalillo County Fire Rescue.
“This new district will help us serve the community even more by cutting response times to the Metropolitan Detention Center from 25 minutes to about seven and allow us to better serve the nearby community,” says Bernalillo County Fire Chief Greg Perez.
Project construction cost is approximately $11.5 million funded through Bernalillo County general funds, public safety bonds, and State of New Mexico grants.
Construction is expected to be completed by December of 2024.
