On July 16th, 2022, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department Huey helicopter crashed in the Las Vegas, NM area on a fire mutual aid mission.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office sent a release:
This evening we learned that one of our aircraft, Metro 2, was involved in a crash near Las Vegas, NM. Preliminary information indicates that 3 BCSO personnel and 1 Bernalillo County Fire employee were onboard at the time of the crash. There are no known survivors. These personnel were headed back to Albuquerque after assisting fire crews with the East Mesa Fire. Representatives from BCSO are on scene along with the New Mexico State Police. At this time the investigation into this incident is in its preliminary stages. As we learn further details we will provide them through official press releases like this one. Please keep these individuals and their families in your thoughts and prayers tonight.
According to the Flight Aware app, the helicopter left Double Eagle Airport at 1:53PM Mountain time on Saturday. The website shows an area where the flight stopped tracking. It is a mountain region south of San Jose, NM located in San Miguel County.

The helicopter that crashed is a Vietnam era Huey helicopter that has had numerous upgrades by Bernalillo County over the years.
A full Federal Aviation Administration investigation will be launched, and those findings will be available at a later date.
