Albuquerque – Candace M. Hopkins an MDC Public Information Officer has told us that one of their new corrections officers tragically died last night. In a press release she says:
Officer Joshua Munoz Died Tuesday Evening In Single Car Crash Near Atrisco Vista and Central Avenue SW
Bernalillo County – The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center is saddened to report the death of one of the facility’s corrections officers, as the result of a single car crash Tuesday evening.
MDC Corrections Officer Joshua Munoz died late Tuesday evening in the crash on the I-40 frontage road, near Atrisco Vista Boulevard and Central Avenue SW. The 19-year-old officer was part of the 246th MDC cadet class, which graduated from the academy last Thursday, Dec. 14. Officer Munoz began his official tour of duty at MDC on Sunday, Dec. 17th.
“Bernalillo County, County Commissioners, MDC officers, staff, and the warden’s office would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Officer Joshua Munoz, including his brothers and sisters from MDC Class 246, who have been impacted greatly by this sudden and tragic loss,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca.
Interim Warden Rosanne Otero Gonzales adds, “Officer Munoz was just beginning his career here at MDC, but he was already a member of the MDC family and will be greatly missed.”
Counseling services are currently being offered to Bernalillo County employees impacted by this incident. The crash which claimed Officer Munoz’s life is under investigation by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Please direct media inquiries related to the investigation to BCSO.
