EXCLUSIVE VIDEO of arrest
NW ABQ — BCSO officials say deputies have apprehended an alleged crime spree offender after an hours long SWAT standoff in the valley area of Albuquerque. We were there for the entire incident and captured the arrest on video.
The standoff originally began near the 800 block of Grecian Ave NW with a reportedly stolen, blue Hyundai. Trujillo sped away from there in the stolen car in a dangerous manner but he was stopped again at around 10:25 a.m. by deputies, APD, and NMSP near 724 Candelaria Rd NW.
The suspect, 37-year-old Tommy Trujillo, was reportedly armed and refused to exit the stolen vehicle. This prompted multiple SWAT units from the metro area to be called to the scene at around 11:18 a.m.
Around 1:30 p.m., Trujillo was seen exiting the vehicle and he tried to flee west bound on foot towards our cameras. Deputies and Officers along with at least two K-9’s immediately apprehended him and took him into custody. (see exclusive video)
During the standoff, Candelaria Road was blocked off between 10th Street and 7th Street for at least two hours. Trujillo is suspected of multiple other pursuits, vehicle thefts and an armed robbery of a business all Monday morning starting at around 5 a.m.
One of the pursuits reportedly began around 8:30 a.m., in the area of Griegos and 2nd Street, and it proceeded southbound to Candelaria where it finally ended.
Several witnesses told us that, in the area of one of the pursuits, multiple cars were damaged. One witness told us that a friend of Trujillo was brought in by crisis negotiators to try to resolve the situation peacefully.
Trujillo does not have a violent criminal record in New Mexico and most of his record is for moving violations. We located one aggravated DWI arrest back in 2006.
BCSO emailed us this statement about the incident:
“The original call started at 5:20am when we responded to the 800 block of Grecian Ave for a stolen vehicle, and it escalated from there. We engaged in multiple pursuits and had to call them off due to his erratic driving endangering the public. We received additional calls about two more stolen vehicles and then later responded to 428 Louisiana Blvd SE at 9:12am in reference to an armed robbery at a business reportedly owned by one of his family members. We ended up locating him again near Candeleria where we engaged in another pursuit and utilized a PIT maneuver to stop his vehicle where he then barricaded himself inside the vehicle just before 10:30am. After our SWAT team arrived and 3 hours of negotiations and attempts to get him out of the vehicle, he fled on foot where two K9 deputies released their K9’s and we successfully took him into custody. He is currently enroute to the hospital for treatment of primarily self-inflicted wounds and deputies will remain with him until he is transported to MDC for booking”
